Use cases presented in two columns

Oftentimes, we're asked about changing the use case display window to show two columns of information in the Main Success Scenario - usually to include some sort of action performed, then a system response - similar to how test cases work.

While the software doesn't support customizing this layout, you can display your use case data in columns in generated reports.

To accomplish this, use specific keywords in your use case steps. This will set them apart and allow you to report the appropriate steps in each column of a table. Using the attached template as an example, you can set up your use cases for a table of "Actions" and "Responses" using a 'system' keyword, then format your template based on that.

The sample creates this 2-column format for use case steps, then includes a more standard format for the extensions.

Questions about this? As always, email support@serlio.com and let us know if you'd like more information.

Here's a link to the sample report template mentioned in the post. Steps that begin with System or The System are shown in the response column; all other steps are shown in the action column. It works well with the Loan Processing sample project that comes with CaseComplete, but your results may vary depending on your writing style. If you don't use the term "system" or response steps don't start with "system" or "the system", you'll need to use different criteria for determining which column each step belongs in.
